Steve Trevelise,
well-known area radio personality and
stand-up comic, says there's never been a
better time to open a comedy club. The
very reasons people are down, Trevelise
notes, are the very reasons they need a good
laugh. "That's where I come in."
Trevelise is the proud owner of Sarcasm -- a
new comedy club in Cherry Hill that will be
officially launched on Jan. 16 with an
appearance by South Jersey comedian (and
former Miss New Jersey) Dena Blizzard.
While a
pre-opening show in late November featuring
Dennis Malloy (of New Jersey 101.5-FM)
sold-out, Trevelise decided to take a few
weeks off over the holidays before unveiling
a full slate of acts for the first month of
the year. "I'm very excited," he said
of the new comedy club, located within the
Cherry Hill Crowne Plaza. Home of the former
Rascals comedy club, the room holds close to
200 people. Decorated with framed photos of
famous comics and movie posters, it has a
"hip, comfortable vibe," Trevelise said,
adding that "you're not jammed in like at
some other clubs." |

Under the direction of former Rascals
manager Jason Pollock, Sarcasm shows take
place at 8:30 p.m. Fridays, and 7:30 and 10
p.m. Saturdays. Aside from special events,
tickets are $18 per person, with a two-item
minimum, making a night there a winning
combination of "A-list comedians at B-list
prices," as Trevelise puts it.
"Sarcasm comedians play all over New York,
Las Vegas and Atlantic City," he said.
"These are guys who have a resume -- they've
been on Leno, Letterman, and Comedy Central,
etc. It's not the typical five same guys who
live in the area.
"My feeling is that people shouldn't have to
travel to Philly or to Atlantic City to see
great comedy," he added. "I want to bring
them great comedy right in South Jersey."
Trevelise spends his weekdays on WIP radio
doing talk radio and news updates -- and
many evenings doing stand-up comedy at Catch
A Rising Star in the Princeton Hyatt, where
he is house emcee and general manager. He
also runs a comedy school at Catch A Rising
Star, and his graduates include former Flyer
Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, wrestling great
King Kong Bundy and former Eagles'
linebacker and WIP host Gary "G" Cobb.
Over the years, Trevelise also has played
the Borgata in Atlantic City, and has opened
for his three favorite comedians: Pat
Cooper, Robert Klein and the late Richard
Jeni.
"I like to emcee because you go on first, do
your thing and then get to do a little more
as you bring up the other acts," Trevelise
said. "The emcee gets people loosened up and
laughing. It's as fun for me as it is for
the audience."
Trevelise's radio career began at Trenton's
WPST-FM in the early '80s. He did updates on
"The Howard Stern" show on WYSP in the '90s,
and started doing comedy later that same
decade, hosting shows at the old Comedy
Works in Philadelphia.
"I like to say that Sarcasm is a comedy club
for those who "get it,' " Trevelise said.
"This is a place for fun, edgy comedy." |
